Cabo

    Los Cabos

Flying into Cabo was a lot different than we imagined. There were mountains AND desert!  The view from above was pretty cool and was even better on the ground.  Having cacti next to an ocean gives you the best of both worlds.  We booked a weeklong stay however the airline gave us $4000, $90 in meal vouchers and a night in Atlanta to go the next day.  It was an easy decision for us!  We got to the resort on Superbowl Sunday and they had TV’s set up with American tailgate themed food.  Fans from all over wore their team’s jersey.  It was kind of funny listening to people cheer when each team scored.  Overall, the resort favored Philly.  Our room was huge!  Because of our club we got a free upgrade.  We like getting the bigger rooms now, especially when we stay so long.  The beach was intense.  The resort was on the Pacific and the beach was on a steep angle so swimming was not allowed.  The water was crazy to watch.  It would change without warning and because of the angle and the pull of the riptide, it was kind of dangerous.

UTV Riding

On Tuesday, we booked a side-by-side tour that took us out into the desert and then to the beach. It was a private tour!  Nobody else booked (which was fine with us).  We got to see lots of cacti and strange looking trees.  We even ran into a herd of cattle!  Our favorite part was seeing a waterfall surrounded by large granite cliffs.  Even though it was February, the water was still running from last September which was the last time they had rain.  It was beautiful to see the oasis.  The tour also took us over a very long hanging bridge that is several hundred feet above the canyon.  We got so dusty they actually blew us off with an air compressor.

Downtown Cabo San Lucas

Wednesday, we booked a snorkel trip a Pelican Rock. The boat takes you out to the famous Arch where you can get close and see the sea lion colony that lives there.  Most of them were sleeping but some were loud.. and very smelly.  The water was kind of cold at 70 degrees and the sun wasn’t much out so we rented wet suits.  It wasn’t as clear as we’d like but we still got to see lots of different fish.  It was cool to see some of the same fish we’ve had in our own tanks.  The guide kept finding things like a puffer, starfish and giant sea slug which he’d give to us to hold.  There were two white tip sharks about six feet below us in a cave!  After snorkeling we spent some time in downtown Los Cabos.  We were explained the difference between Los Cabos, Cabo San Lucas and Jose del Cabo but I can’t remember and they are pretty much all “Cabo” to me.  The town was pretty cool.  There were tons of shops and restaurants and lots of mariachi bands walking around.  We bought way more than we needed.  We also had rolled ice cream for the first time.  It was only $5 and it took a lot of effort to make it that we felt guilty only paying that much.

Whale Watching

We were told Nov-April is whale season in Cabo so we booked a tour for early Thursday morning. This was the second time we booked a whale watching tour (the first being in Saint Lucia and seeing nothing).  It was AWESOME!  Best tour ever!  There were so many humpback whales!  I would have went whale watching every day if I could have.  The babies are still learning and so they breach a lot and it’s very exciting to watch them.  Sometimes we would even see the mothers breach.  Watching them jump and play was amazing and we got some pretty good footage of them.  This was definitely the best part of our trip.

The rest of our time we spent winding down and relaxing. Our final adventure was a luxury sunset cruise.  We saw a whale on the horizon and it was a nice way to conclude the trip.  Overall, we had a really good time in Cabo.  The scenery was beautiful and the whales exciting.
