Curaçao

From February 23-29, 2016 we traveled to Willemstad, Curaçao which was the Netherland Antilles until 10/10/10. The island is very small and arid.  It’s very dry there as they have no inland water. The island is formed from lava and stone coral.  We stayed at Sunscape and the hotel was nice but has room for improvement. While there we went on an ATV tour which we drove ATV’s through the streets of Curacao (they drive on the right unlike most of the Caribbean which drives on the left) to the north side of the island where we visited the Blowhole (a place where waves basically crash into a cliff and they spray tens of feet high). Walking around there you can look down and see seashells on the rocks and fossils. On the ATV tour we then went to Indian Cave which you do a small amount of hiking up on a mountain. Natural bats live there are you could see them flying around when we entered.  The cave had cacti in it and you had to be careful not to touch one. On the way back from the cave we stopped at the Ostrich Farm though the tour did not allow admittance into the majority of the farm we did see a few birds.

We also went to the Sea Aquarium which they offer a variety of small 10-15minute shows/demonstrations/displays ranging from feeding flamingos to dolphin and sea lion shows.  We watched the sea lion and she was quite talented but they crammed us into a small bleacher section so you were basically touching the person next to you, in front of you and behind you in the beating sun.  That wasn’t fun.  It was very exciting though because they had sea turtles there and this was the first time seeing them.  They are huge and we were not able to take them home. When we got there I saw a guy get bit by a flamingo.  I asked Kyle later to stand by them to take a photo.  I had my finger on the record button waiting for him to get bit but it didn’t happen and so we switched turns.  I got bit.  It didn’t hurt but was more surprising than anything.  I don’t like flamingos much anymore.

Overall it was a good trip.  We didn’t get ice cream cones and naps everyday like we normally do on these all inclusive winter getaways but we still had fun.
