London 2

London NFL Game

Our second time in London was very brief. We wanted to use all of our time available in Ireland since we had visited London the prior year.  We got in Halloween evening with hopes of doing something at night but it didn’t happen.  I had made arrangements for a car to pick us up at the airport – the one where the guy has your name on a sign.  After walking around and waiting fifteen minutes I called the hotel.  Something happened with the booking translation and the car company never got the message.  We then needed to book a car ourselves and wait for it to arrive (I complained about this process when we visited last time!).  Traffic was terrible and the driver was trying to avoid all the main roads that were backed up.  We went through a bunch of residential areas and saw some kids trick or treating which is a relatively new thing for them (a Western activity).  The taxi driver then couldn’t find the hotel so we ended up doing a loop once or twice.  We finally made it to the hotel and the driver offered to take us to the airport when we leave.  We agreed and made arrangements with him for the time we would depart

The hotel staff were very apologetic for our situation.  They offered us a free drink in their lounge and the next day the manager left us a hand written note with a box of four chocolates on our bed.  It was nice to see some people still care about customer service.  By the time we got settled in the room we were starving and walked to an Italian place several blocks over.  The restaurant was neat because their kitchen was downstairs and they had a small food elevator that they would use to deliver the food to the restaurant floor.

London NFL Game

The next day was Sunday and the day of the football game.  We remembered using the Tube pretty well.  The game was not a very good one but we were still happy to go.  The Lions pretty much got blown out.  The English fans are more fans of the NFL and not one specific team.  They really just wanted to see good plays. The person that cheered for a touchdown of the Chiefs cheered for a touchdown of the Lions.  That night we ate at Pizza Hut.  The restaurants that were all by us were Asian or Indian cuisine (not for us).  Pizza Hut was pretty disappointing but oh well.  That night we received a call about our transportation for the airport.  The driver we made arrangements with was no longer available so he found someone else.  No big deal.

The day we went to depart we waited and waited for the driver.  I called and wasn’t able to reach anybody.  After waiting too long we decided to have the hotel make arrangements to get us a driver and he came in two minutes.  As we were leaving we heard the front desk giving someone directions to the hotel.  We wondered if that was the missing driver.  Oh well.  The rest of the trip went pretty well and it was a good trip over all.  We don’t have any desire to go back to London but would definitely go back to Ireland.
