St. Lucia

Pitons

St. Lucia was our favorite of all the Caribbean islands we’ve been to. We were there from Feb 10-17, 2015 and stayed at St. James Morgan Bay in Gros Islet which is at the opposite end of the island from where we flew into.  I highly recommend this resort for the atmosphere, pools, beach and restaurants.  St. Lucia is a small island and they have one international airport which they schedule flights to arrive one after another and depart one after another so it gets really busy for those few hours of the day.  It took us the better part of an hour to get through customs when we landed.  There were so many people they ran out of queue rope.  Our ride from the airport to the resort was about an hour and 15 minutes and was a great way to see the variety of the island.  Our taxi driver was friendly and we listened and sang Michael Jackson songs during our ride (Kyle did not partake).  When we got to our resort we were greeted with a welcome beverage and a golf cart to take us to our room.  We spent the rest of the evening learning the resort and watching the sunset.

The next day was mostly dedicated to the beach and sun with ice cream cones and naps included.  We did go out on a whale watching tour which was a waste because all we saw were tuna.

Our third day we booked a tour which took us on a boat out of our resort’s own Joy’s Tours.  On it, we saw the Pitons (pronounced pee and ton as in wonton) which are St. Lucia’s beloved mountains and a rarity in the Caribbean. On our tour we walked on a black sand beach, saw a giant bat cave, and Mick Jagger and George Foreman’s houses.  We went to Sulfur Springs which is the words only “drive in” volcano.  It sounds better than it actually is.  The sulfur smelled bad

but they had a hot spring where we got in and covered ourselves in mud.  It’s supposed to help the skin.  Next we had lunch on the beach then went to a marine reserve where we snorkeled for the first time.  We did not snorkel long.  Something about getting water in your mouthpiece and a panic attack killed the mood, but seeing the coral reef and fish below were worth it and we will definitely go again.  On the way back we stopped to watch some cliff divers who swam to the boat looking for money afterword’s.  I did not appreciate this.  When we got back to the resort the waves coming in were big and a red flag was out signaling that it was not safe to swim.  We decided to go out and play in them anyways…many people followed us. They were so big you had to be careful not to go too far out so they didn’t sweep you away or pull you under.  A couple times Kyle had to look around because they’d carried me far away.  Kyle learned he needed to hold on to his swim trunks :).

A couple days later was Valentine’s Day and we decided to take a sunset cruise.  They have this thing there called the green flash where the second the sun goes down you can see a green flash in the sky.  Kyle said he saw it and I looked hard but saw nothing.  The cruise was nice as they had a jazz player on board with wine and hor d’oeuvres.  It sprinkled for a moment but was still nice to watch the sunset.

Our last day we reserved for lounging around, sleeping and eating.  We fed the pigeons, searched for the resort cats and relaxed on the beach.  Overall, St. Lucia is a place I would highly recommend to anyone wanting to go to the Caribbean.  It has beaches and mountains and is a great place to experience.
