Ericsson Globe Game 2

When the Red Wings announced they were going to play two games overseas we knew we had to go. I went into my office early in the morning (like 3AM) to buy the tickets when they went on sale.  They were playing the Saint Louis Blues on Friday, Oct 2, 2009 and Saturday, Oct 3, 2009 and we were going.  We flew in the morning of Oct 2 and out the next Saturday, Oct 10th.  This was our first time travelling abroad and we were quite ill prepared.  Since we got in early in the morning our room wasn’t ready so we left our bags at the hotel and decided to go out and have breakfast and kill time till it would be ready.  We found a McDonalds and ate there.  Then we wandered around a bit going down to the city center and then decided to make our way back to the hotel.  We didn’t get a map or directions and had to stop and ask people how to get back.  Our hotel wasn’t a big one by any means and was down a small road/alley.

Ericsson Globe

Finally, we made it back and learned how to get to the game that night.  The game was exciting and it was funny to listen to the crowd.  The music was typical music you would here at a game in Detroit.  One of the clips they like to play is an up-tempo beat with a guy singing “I love this city” and it was funny to listen to the Swedes sing it.  The princess also attended the game which was cool.  The first game they lost 3-4 and the second game they lost 3-5.  I’m sick of hearing when the saints go marching in.  Even though they lost it was still fun until we got lost on our way back the night of the second game.  I thought I knew which train stop was ours and it turns out we got off at the wrong one and had no idea how to get back.  We were out walking the streets in the middle of the night in a foreign city with no clue how to get to our hotel.  Finally we got a cab who only drove us for just a few minutes.

Our third day in Stockholm we had no idea what to do and we still had jet lag bad waking up before breakfast would even be ready.  We decided to go back to Ericsson Globe which is where the hockey games were to see the area in the daylight and also because that was the only place we knew how to get to.  We spent the rest of the day figuring out what we wanted to do for our next few days.

Vasa Ship

Skansen Open Air Museum

On Monday, we decided to go to Galma Stan which is Old Town Stockholm where the palace is.  We walked around and took pictures and ate at an awesome Italian café there.  We then traveled to Djurgården which is a small island in central Stockholm with lots to do.  We first went to the Vasa Museum which is home to a 17th century Viking ship.  It was really neat to walk around and see how big it was and all the detail they took into carving on it.  Then we went basically next door to an aquarium where we had lunch and about five different desserts.  After that we went to the Skansen Open Air Museum and Zoo.  This was probably my favorite thing about Stockholm.  They had a glass blower and a gift shop that you could purchase the glass in.  They had different windmills you could look at and bears and wolves that were all outside.  On an indoor part of the zoo they had lots of other animals you could see and a lemur area where you could go right up to them but you had to be careful not to touch because they can get aggressive.

Boat Tour

The rest of our trip was pretty much filled with different museums and boat rides that took you out to the Baltic sea and pointed out different things along the way.  We met a couple of guys on a boat tour that were from Chicago and went to TGI Fridays together after.  They were big travelers and were visiting Copenhagen.  They told us to go to the Greek Isle.  We also learned that our bartender knew Johan Franzen which was pretty cool.  At the end of the trip in the Detroit airport Kyle spotted Darren McCarty walking right next to us.  It was a great way to end the trip to chat with him for a moment and telling him we just had watched the wings in Stockholm.  I think he was pretty impressed.  Overall Stockholm was a stressful trip and probably expected for our first time international.  We ate a lot of Pringles because the food is a bit different than what we’re used to.  One restaurant we went to even served Reindeer burgers.  Poor Rudolf.
